The Tamil Nadu Government has announced its list of public holidays for 2027. If you’re planning leave, travel, a family function or a bank visit, you need the exact dates and weekdays well in advance.
This post covers the full list and also works out which holidays fall on weekends, where the long weekends are, and one bank holiday that applies only to some banks.
The Tamil Nadu Government issued the notification under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. It builds on the Central Home Ministry notification of 8 June 1957, which designates "Sundays" and other days as public holidays. The state’s notification lists the days it treats as general public holidays for 2027.

Glance of 2027 Tamil Nadu Govt Holidays
- 24 holidays on 23 distinct dates. Independence Day and Milad-un-Nabi both fall on 15 August 2027.
- 8 of the 23 dates fall on a Saturday or Sunday: 16 Jan, 17 Jan, 1 May, 15 Aug, 4 Sep, 2 Oct, 9 Oct and 25 Dec. Most offices will get no extra day off for these.
- 15 holidays fall on weekdays, so these are the ones that add days off.
- Independence Day falls on a Sunday, and so does Milad-un-Nabi.
- Tamil New Year and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birthday share a single holiday on 14 April 2027.
Long weekends in 2027
These are the stretches where the holiday list lines up with a weekend. Check them against your own organisation’s working days, since some offices work on Saturdays.
- 1–3 January: New Year falls on a Friday, giving a three-day weekend.
- 15–17 January: Pongal (Friday), Thiruvalluvar Day (Saturday) and Uzhavar Thirunal (Sunday) make a three-day break. This is one of the best stretches in the year for a trip home.
- 22–24 January: Thai Poosam on a Friday gives another three-day weekend.
- 26–28 March: Good Friday on a Friday gives a three-day weekend.
- 17–19 April: Mahavir Jayanthi falls on a Monday.
- 15–17 May: Bakrid falls on a Monday, so it’s a three-day weekend if your office is closed on Saturday and Sunday.
- 8–10 October: Ayudha Pooja (Friday) and Vijayadasami (Saturday) join with Sunday for a three-day weekend.
- 28–31 October: Deepavali is on a Thursday. If you take leave on Friday 29 October, you get a four-day break for one day of leave.
Planning a wedding or function around these dates?
Public holidays are a convenient time for family events, but they’re also when travel and venue demand are highest. If you’re choosing a date for a wedding, housewarming or other function, check our list of Tamil muhurtham dates alongside this holiday list. A date that works astrologically may also be a day your guests are off work, or a day when everyone is travelling.
Things to keep in mind
- The bank annual closing on 1 April applies only to commercial and cooperative banks in Tamil Nadu. Other offices and schools follow their own calendars.
- Holidays for Muslim festivals such as Ramzan, Bakrid, Muharram and Milad-un-Nabi depend on moon sighting. The government’s date can shift by a day close to the festival, so confirm closer to the date.
- This is the state-level general holiday list. Schools, colleges, private companies and central government offices may follow different calendars, and local holidays for particular districts or temple festivals are announced separately.
- Banks follow their own schedules too. Besides these holidays, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, and on Sundays.
